Egypt court upholds 5-year sentence against activist Alaa Abdel-Fattah

Egypt's Court of Cassation upheld on Wednesday a five-year prison sentence against activist Alaa Abdel-Fattah for illegal protesting and assaulting a policeman during a demonstration outside Cairo's Shura Council in November 2013. In 2014, Abdel-Fattah was sentenced to 15 years in prison, though the penalty was reduced on retrial in 2015 to five years. Twenty-three other defendants in the case were also sentenced.

Abdel-Fattah has already served three-and-a-half years of his sentence. All other defendants in the case have received presidential pardons. The famous blogger is also currently facing trial for insulting the judiciary.

The court has is set to issue its verdict in the case on 30 December.
