Hamas reveals details of its approval of the first phase of the hostage deal with an American guarantee

Egypt Daily News - A Hamas source revealed that they agreed to the first phase of the hostage release deal with a guarantee from the United States that Israel will completely withdraw from Gaza after 124 days, when all three phases of the agreement are completed.

Channel 12 quoted an unnamed Hamas official as saying that the American guarantee was sent through Egyptian and Qatari mediators who are scheduled to meet with representatives of the movement in Cairo today.

Israel has repeatedly insisted that it will not accept an end to the war in Gaza as part of a potential hostage deal.

The agreement also reportedly comes with a US-backed promise that Israel will not begin its planned military operation in the city of Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip.

The latest proposal reportedly includes a first phase lasting up to 40 days during which up to 33 of the more than 100 Israeli hostages held in Gaza since October 7 would be released, while the second phase would last for at least six weeks and would see both sides agree to and release more hostages and commit to a longer cessation of fighting.

It is also believed that the first phase will allow the return of Palestinians to northern Gaza, with the US saying that Israel has agreed to the unrestricted return of civilians in Gaza to areas controlled by Tel Aviv. This also includes the release of hundreds of Palestinian prisoners in exchange for Israeli hostages.

Channel 12 quoted a Hamas source as saying that “settlements have been reached” regarding the number of Palestinian security prisoners who will be released for each Israeli hostage.

The report comes on the heels of an official statement from Hamas late last night that the movement will send a delegation to Cairo “determined to secure an agreement in a way that meets the demands of the Palestinians.”
