Ahram - Egypt’s National Elections Authority (NEA) announced on Monday that incumbent President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi emerged victorious in Egypt's 2024 presidential elections with 39.7 million votes, representing 89.6 percent of valid votes.

President El-Sisi will serve a six-year term until 2030.

In its press conference on Monday, the NEA Head Hazem Badawy said the 2024 presidential elections witnessed a turnout of 66.8 percent, with 44.7 million citizens voting in the elections at home and abroad, out of 67.3 million eligible voters.

According to Badawy, Hazem Omar, head of the People's Republican Party, won 1.9 million votes or 4.5 percent of the total votes; Farid Zahran, chairman of the leftist Egyptian Social Democratic Party, won 1.7 million votes (4 percent); and Abdel-Sanad Yamama, head of the Wafd Party, won 822.6 thousand votes (1.9 percent).

The authority reported that 489,3 thousand spoilt votes were cast, representing 1.1 percent of the total. Across 9,376 polling stations nationwide, Egyptians voted in 11,631 sub-committees under the supervision of more than 15,000 judges, as confirmed by the NEA.

Voting in Egypt took place between 11 and 13 December, with Egyptians abroad voting from 1 to 3 December, at 137 Egyptian embassies and consulates across 121 countries.

Comparative turnouts

The NEA's statistics revealed that this year's presidential elections witnessed the highest voter turnout compared to previous electoral events in Egypt. In the 2019 referendum on amending the constitution, the participation rate stood at 44.3 percent of eligible voters.

President El-Sisi secured his second presidential term in 2018 with 21.83 million votes, amounting to 97 percent of total valid votes. At that time, just under 24.25 million citizens cast their votes, representing a turnout of 41 percent out of nearly 59 million eligible voters.

During the 2014 presidential elections, President El-Sisi claimed victory with 23.78 million votes (96.9 percent), while the total turnout was 47.5 percent. The turnout rate in the 2014 referendum on constitutional amendments was 38.6 percent.

In the 2012 presidential elections, the turnout was 46.4 percent in the first round and 51.8 percent in the second round. For the referendum on the 2012 constitution, turnout was 32.9 percent.

The general referendum in 2011 recorded a turnout of 41.2 percent.
