America vetoes Palestinian request for full membership in the United Nations

Egypt Daily News - On Thursday, the United States used its veto power against the Palestinian application for full membership in the United Nations. The United States, Israel's main ally, believes that the establishment of a future Palestinian state must depend on negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians.

The vote was in favor of the request by a majority of 12 votes to one, and the United States rejected it, with two members abstaining from voting.

Earlier, Deputy Spokesman for the US State Department, Vedant Patel, said that the United States is “very clear that early measures in New York, even with the best intentions, will not achieve the establishment of a state for the Palestinian people.”

For his part, the Special Representative of the Palestinians, Ziad Abu Amr, told the Security Council: “How can the State of Palestine be granted full membership in the United Nations, like other countries around the world? How could this harm the prospects for peace between the Palestinians and the Israelis?”
